Long-time Red River resident Lester Evert Lewis died in his sleep Saturday, January 12, 2019. He was 88. Born in Post, Texas, to L.S. and Jesse Hogan Lewis, his family moved from Wichita Falls Texas, to Red River in 1936. He was the youngest of three children, with a brother Clifford, and a sister Evelyn.
He married Jan Moore in 1955 and the couple lived most of their married life in Red River. Jan died in 2017.
Lester was involved in the building of the Red River Ski Area in 1958 and built the Whirley Bird tubing area 4 years later on the Lewis Ranch at the West end of town. The area eventually became Powder Puff Mountain Ski Area.
He was active in his community and was a supporter of the Red
River Chamber of Commerce. When the Town of Red River was incorporated in 1971, Lester served as a councilman on the first
Town Council.
Lester is survived by son Brett Lewis (Ruth), of Red River, and
daughter Laura Smith (Joe) of Rockett , Texas, granddaughters Jennifer
Smith and Allison Smith of Ferris, Texas, and three great grandchildren.
A celebration of Lester’s life was held Friday, January 25, 2019, at the Red River Community House with pastor Ed Hampton.
