Georgia Owens

Georgia Ann Croom died on October 4, 2022, in Georgetown, Texas after a long battle with cancer. She was born on June 27, 1948, in Beeville, Texas to Lawrence and Virginia Croom. She grew up in Houston, Texas and graduated from Waltrip High School in 1966. She graduated from Houston Baptist College in 1968 and Stephen F. Austin State University in 1970. At SFA, she met Michael Taylor Owens, and they were married on August 29, 1970, in Houston at Baptist Temple. They then began their married life in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where Mike was attending Louisiana State University. Georgia worked at Louisiana National Bank, Uniroyal, and Exxon while Mike attended graduate school. After graduation, opportunity and adventure took Georgia and Mike to Calgary, Alberta, Canada where she gave birth to Jennifer. Then moving to Jacksonville, Texas, she gave birth to Jessica. Georgia loved being a mother to her daughters and could do so full-time when they moved to Georgetown, Texas. While the girls were in school, Georgia volunteered at the Georgetown Public Library, the girls’ schools, and was a Director for Georgetown Community Bible Study. Her love for Community Bible Study was a lifetime pursuit for 40 years.
When Jennifer and Jessica began their college careers, Georgia worked for Georgetown Title Company to provide for all their school expenses. She enjoyed title research and was a natural. With both daughters grown and married, adventure and opportunity took her to New Mexico and New Hampshire before returning to Texas where Georgia was able to work as a Librarian, her dream job until her retirement in 2010. In retirement, Georgia and Mike moved to Red River, New Mexico. From early childhood, she loved Red River and her mountain home. While in Red River, she volunteered as a member and President of the Red River Library Board until her death. She authored and published a historical nonfiction book,, and donated the sales to the Friends of the Red River Public Library.
Georgia trusted Jesus Christ as her savior when she was a girl and continued in her faith throughout her life. Georgia was an active member of Angel Fire Baptist Church and loved the opportunity to serve in her church library, at Angel’s Attic, a thrift store operated by Angel Fire Baptist Church, and on mission to Marseilles France. She loved and served her family. She was an exemplary wife, mother, and grandmother and leaves a spiritual legacy that is bearing fruit for her Savior.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Croom. She is survived by her husband, Michael Owens, her daughters, Jennifer Clark and Jessica Scruggs, her mother, Virginia Croom, her brother, Scotty Croom, sons’-in-law, Ben Clark and Glenn Scruggs, and grandchildren, Easton and Reagan Clark and McGwire and Celeste Scruggs.
Service will be held Monday, October 10, 2022, at 11:00am at Ramsey Funeral Home at 5600 Williams Drive in Georgetown, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made via mail to Friends of the Red River Public Library, PO Box 263, Red River, NM, 87558.
